Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems and Viral Diseases

The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, and blood vessels. The lymphatic system consists of the lymph, lymph nodes, and the lymphoid organs (tonsils, appendix, and thymus gland).

STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

The center of the cardiovascular system is the heart. The function of the cardiovascular system is to circulate blood through the body's tissues so it can deliver certain substances to cells and remove other substances from them.

Blood is a mixture of formed elements and a liquid called plasma. The plasma transports dissolved nutrients to body cells and carries wastes away from. the cells. The formed elements in blood include red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, carry oxygen and some carbon dioxide, although most of the carbon dioxide in blood is dissolved in the plasma. White blood cells, or leukocytes, play several roles in defending the body against infection. Recall that some white cells, particularly neutrophils, are phagocytes. B cells and T cells, two types of lymphocytes, play key roles in immunity.
